Area History, Attractions and Activities
The Pine Strawberry area enjoys four seasons with fun activities for the year-round traveler.
In the early 1870’s many of the first settlers came to the Rim Country over covered wagon trails. Settled by a questionable mix of prospectors, ranchers, self-appointed armed lawmen, saloon women and school teachers and preachers, this land has many stories. Pine has drawn many artists because of its incredible variety of natural beauty.
“The Rim Country” of Pine, Strawberry and Payson offers many outdoor activities. The great outdoor beauty of the Mogollon Rim was formed millions of years ago. The Rim, primarily a national forest, is over 200 miles long and 7,500 feet high. Wildlife includes eagles, hawks, ravens, elk, deer, black bear, mountain lion, javelina, coyote, and fox. Springtime wildflowers bring a host of wild birds.
Cool ponderosa pines in summertime heat are a welcomed relief from the cities with lower altitudes. Pine is a popular haven for campers, hikers, trekkers, photographers, horseback riders, fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts.

Thousands of trails provide unlimited exploration for the hiker, backpacker, photographer and nature lovers. Many of the hiking paths originated in the 1800's when settlers were linked to homesteads. Each trail holds something special; many give breathtaking views of the Rim above or the mountains stretching below the trail.
Shopping
Quaint retail shops in the area sell many handmade local items as well as staple items. For the antique collector, special shops afford great buys of historical items from charming old barns or farm houses. Nearby restaurants serve a variety of food fares from quick snacks to full course meals. There are grocery stores in town and take-out food services. Pine is also home for artists of many mediums. The growing art community offers workshops by accomplished artists, juried exhibits, festivals and shops. Music festivals are common in the summertime, from fiddler’s bluegrass and blues to choral presentations. Payson’s area Casino offers gaming for those who wish to enjoy the chance.
Historical Museums hold an interesting journey back into this area’s past. Strawberry Schoolhouse is a historical honored landmark, Oldest Schoolhouse in Arizona, built in 1895, and is still used for authentic events and teaching the old ways – located in Strawberry, Arizona (just 3 miles north of Pine). Payson hosts the oldest continuous rodeo and is world famous for that event with parades, gala competitions and activities.
